What's behind it?
A herniated disc occurs when the soft core of the disc pushes through the fibrous ring and presses on surrounding nerves. The result is often severe, radiating pain in the back or leg. With targeted, phased physiotherapy, the majority of herniated discs can be treated conservatively — without surgery.
Causes
- Poor posture and overloading of the spine
- Weak core and back muscles
- Lack of movement and prolonged sitting
- Sudden awkward movements or heavy lifting
Symptoms
- Acute, stabbing back pain
- Radiating pain into the leg (sciatica)
- Numbness or tingling in legs or feet
- Restricted spinal movement
