Overcoming runner's knee. Running pain-free again.
Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) plagues many runners with pain on the outside of the knee. We analyse your running technique and treat the cause.
Book appointmentWhat's behind it?
Runner's knee, medically known as iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS), is one of the most common injuries among endurance athletes. It is caused by friction of the iliotibial band on the outside of the knee, usually due to misalignment, too-rapid training increases, or muscular imbalances. We analyse your running technique and leg statics and develop a plan that gets you back on the road pain-free.
Causes
- Too-rapid training increase (volume or intensity)
- Muscular imbalances (weak hip abductors)
- Lack of mobility in the gluteal and thigh muscles
- Wrong footwear or surface
Symptoms
- Pain on the outside of the knee
- Pain typically starting after a few kilometres of running
- Pain worsening on downhill runs
- Tenderness at the outer knee joint space
How we treat Runner's Knee (ITBS).
Acute relief
Anti-inflammatory treatment and training pause.
Stretching & mobilisation
Releasing adhesions in the iliotibial band and gluteal muscle.
Hip strength
Strengthening the hip abductors as a common cause.
Running technique
Analysis and correction of running mechanics to prevent relapses.
