Treating IT band syndrome. Loading pain-free again.
Pain on the outside of the knee or hip from the iliotibial band? We analyse your loading and treat the cause.
Book appointmentWhat's behind it?
IT band syndrome is an overuse complaint of the iliotibial band, which runs from the hip to the knee. It usually manifests as pain on the outside of the knee or less commonly at the hip. Runners and cyclists are frequently affected. We analyse the cause — from running technique to muscular imbalances to footwear — and treat specifically.
Causes
- Too-rapid training increase (volume or intensity)
- Weak hip abductors and gluteal muscles
- Shortening or adhesion of the iliotibial band
- Wrong footwear or unfavourable surface
Symptoms
- Pain on the outside of the knee or hip
- Pain starting after a specific duration of loading
- Tenderness at the outer knee joint space
- Pain worsening on downhill runs or long distances
How we treat IT Band Syndrome.

Anti-inflammatory treatment and load adjustment.
Stretching & mobilisation
Releasing adhesions in the iliotibial band and gluteal muscle.
Hip strength
